The team at DEC has followed the hydrogen conversation over the past couple of years, and we are strong advocates that the future fuel mix for UK plc will include Hydrogen at the heart of an energy strategy that the country will consume across domestic, commercial, and industrial applications, as we push for Net Zero.
DEC was highly delighted when invited by Cadent to attend the HyDeploy2 Project Final Report Launch Event organised by the HyDeploy Consortia and hosted by Lord McNicol of West Kilbride at the House of Commons in late 2022. So, we dusted off our best threads, removed the usual PPE day wear, and jumped a train down to London to listen to the report findings.
HyDeploy2 delivered 20% blended hydrogen with natural gas in a second trial for around 1,600 residents in the village of Winlaton, near Gateshead. This ground-breaking project identified an innovative solution to reduce carbon emissions. With more than 83% of UK homes connected to the gas grid, hydrogen blended gas does not require expensive or disruptive changes to home appliances, nor does blending disrupt the work of thousands of engineers.
The UK government in 2020 announced a plan to develop 5GW of low-carbon hydrogen generation by 2030, but in 2022 doubled the target to 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030. This capacity and a network ready to deliver blended hydrogen bring the realisation of a greener gas supply ever closer.
The Consortium is keen to work with the private sector in realising this ambitious plan, hence our invitation. At the event, we had the opportunity to discuss our potential site in Humberside with Cadent and other invitees. As a result, DEC asked Cadent to put it on the Register of Interest for Hydrogen.
Ricky Rogers said of his attendance.
“One of the key takeaways from this event is that the UK gas network is ready to accept blended hydrogen now. This could be a key to unlocking the hydrogen economy in stimulating production and demand.
The day was incredible; to listen to the report and see the crossover in the projects we have in the design and feasibility phase that align with this opportunity was pleasing.”
The future is Hydrogen, and DEC will play its part in the coming months and years.
